1. WRIGHT's underwear (American)—
(a.) Original bought at E. Lee and Co., 2 dol. 50 c.
(b.) Counterfeit bought at a Japanese shop in Japanese Concession, cost 1 dol. 40 c.
2. Air-gun bought at a Japanese shop in Japanese Concession, cost 3 dol. 80 c. (American).
3. Lantern bought at a Japanese shop in Japanese Concession, cost 1 dol. 90 c. (British).
(As regards 2 and 3, the shopkeeper declared they were articles manufactured in Japan.)
4. Russet cream. This article was handed to this Office by the Imperial Maritime Customs, who had received it from a Japanese importer, direct from Japan.

WITH reference to your telegram No. 3 of the 1st November, calling for a list of British trade-marks imitated, counterfeited, or used by Japanese in China, I have the honour to inform you that I was unable to apply to the local Chamber of Commerce owing to the presence of foreign and Japanese merchants. I therefore requested the heads of British firms to render me what assistance they could. However, that neither of these could give me any specimens of imitated trade-marks. They, I regret to say, are mostly wholesale dealers who do not deal in the sundry goods which are imported from Japan, mostly for the use of the Japanese themselves.
By parcel-post I have to-day sent you some specimens of British trade-marks imitated by Japanese. All Japanese imitations here are imported from Japan, and I have been unable to find anything imitated locally. Among the items forwarded to you are a hat and a pair of gloves contributed by Mr. Roniford, a Customs Examiner here, who takes an interest in the matter, but who has unfortunately sent his collection to England, where it will ultimately reach the hands of some Chamber of Commerce. The rest were purchased by me in Japanese or Chinese shops locally. I am sending the bottles entire, as the whole get-up also constitutes an imitation sufficiently close to deceive Chinese who cannot read the labels, as, e.g., the brandy and Worcestershire sauce found in Chinese establishments.
